This paper tries to find arguments for Bertolt Brecht's relevance to the present. It points out parallels between Brecht's epic theater and music, especially opera. A central point is the aesthetics of form, which was so important for Brecht and which is decisive for his modernity.

Observation of B_s Production at the Y(5S) Resonance

Using the CLEO detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, we have observed the B_s meson in e^+e^- annihilation at the Υ(5S) resonance. We find 14 candidates consistent with B_s decays into final states with a J/ψ or a D_s^((*)-). The probability that we have observed a background fluctuation is less than 8×10^(-10). We have established that at the energy of the Υ(5S) resonance B_s production proceeds predominantly through the creation of B_s^*B̅ _s^* pairs. We find σ(e^+e^-→B^s^*B̅ ^*)=[0.11_(-0.03)^(+0.04)(stat)±0.02(syst)]  nb, and set the following limits: σ(e^+e^-→B_sB̅ _s)/σ(e^+e^-→B_s^*B̅ _s^*)<0.16 and [σ(e^+e^-→B_sB̅ _s^*)+σ(e^+e^-→B_s*B̅ _s)]/σ(e^+e^-→B_s*B̅ _s^*)<0.16 (90% C.L.). The mass of the B_s^* meson is measured to be M_(B_s^*=[5.414±0.001(stat)±0.003(syst)]  GeV/c^2

Two-photon width of the charmonium state X_(c2)

The two-photon width of X_(c2)^3P_2 state of charmonium has been measured using 14.4 fb^(-1) of e^+e^-data taken at √s =9.46–11.30 GeV with the CLEO III detector. The yy-fusion reaction studied is e^+e^- → e^+e^-yy, → yy X_(c2) → yJ/Ψ → ye^+e^-(µ^+µ^-). We measure Г_(yy) (X_(c2))B(X_(c2)) → y J/Ψ)B(J/Ψ → e^+e^- + µ^+µ^-)= 13.2 ± 1.4(stat)± 1.1(syst) eV, and obtain Г yy(Xc2)= 559 ± 57(stat) ± 48(syst) ± 36(br) eV. This result is in excellent agreement with the result of -fusion measurement by Belle and is consistent with that of the pp → X_(c2) → yy measurement, when they are both reevaluated using the recent CLEO result for the radiative decay X_(c2) → J/Ψ

On The Expected Photon Spectrum in B -> X_s + gamma and Its Uses

Measuring the photon energy spectrum in radiative B decays provides essential help for gaining theoretical control over semileptonic B transitions. The hadronic recoil mass distribution in B -> X_u \ell\nu promises the best environment for determining |V_ub|. The theoretical uncertainties are largest in the domain of low values of the lepton pair mass q^2. Universality relations allow to describe this domain reliably in terms of the photon spectrum in B -> X_s + \gamma. A method is proposed to incorporate 1/m_b corrections into this relation. The low-E_\gamma tail in radiative decays is important in the context of extracting |V_ub|. We argue that CLEO's recent fit to the spectrum underestimates the fraction of the photon spectrum below 2 GeV. Potentially significant uncertainties enter in the theoretical evaluation of the integrated end-point lepton spectrum or the B -> X_u \ell\nu width with a too high value of the lower cut on q^2 in alternative approaches to |V_ub|.Comment: 24 pages, 6 figures, LaTeX. Revised: Complete version. Numerical predictions are improved and the estimate for the decay fraction revised. The theoretical expectations for the decay fraction and the spectrum itself are given on the plot

Search for the standard model Higgs boson in the H → ZZ → ℓ^+ℓ^−τ^+τ^− decay channel in pp collisions at √s = 7 TeV

    Get PDF
A search is reported for the standard model Higgs boson in the H → ZZ → ℓ^+ℓ^−τ^+τ^− decay mode, where ℓ = μ or e, in proton-proton collisions at √s = 7TeV , corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.7 fb^(−1) collected with the CMS detector at the LHC. No evidence is found for a significant deviation from the background expectation. An upper limit four to twelve times larger than the predicted value is set at 95% confidence level for the product of the standard model Higgs boson production cross section and decay branching fraction in the mass range 190 < m_H < 600 GeV

The Presampler for the Forward and Rear Calorimeter in the ZEUS Detector

The ZEUS detector at HERA has been supplemented with a presampler detector in front of the forward and rear calorimeters. It consists of a segmented scintillator array read out with wavelength-shifting fibers. We discuss its desi gn, construction and performance. Test beam data obtained with a prototype presampler and the ZEUS prototype calorimeter demonstrate the main function of this detector, i.e. the correction for the energy lost by an electron interacting in inactive material in front of the calorimeter.Comment: 20 pages including 16 figure

Charm meson spectra in e^+e^- annihilation at 10.5 GeV center of mass energy

    Get PDF
Using the CLEO detector at the Cornell Electron-positron Storage Ring, we have measured the scaled momentum spectra, dσ/dx_p, and the inclusive production cross sections of the charm mesons D^+, D^0, D^(⋆+), and D^(⋆0) in e^+e^− annihilation at about 10.5 GeV center of mass energy, excluding the decay products of B mesons. The statistical accuracy and momentum resolution are superior to previous measurements at this energy

Observation and studies of jet quenching in PbPb collisions at √sNN = 2.76 TeV

    Get PDF
Jet production in PbPb collisions at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 2.76 TeV was studied with the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) detector at the LHC, using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 6.7 μb^(−1). Jets are reconstructed using the energy deposited in the CMS calorimeters and studied as a function of collision centrality. With increasing collision centrality, a striking imbalance in dijet transverse momentum is observed, consistent with jet quenching. The observed effect extends from the lower cutoff used in this study (jet pT = 120 GeV/c) up to the statistical limit of the available data sample (jet pT ≈ 210 GeV/c). Correlations of charged particle tracks with jets indicate that the momentum imbalance is accompanied by a softening of the fragmentation pattern of the second most energetic, away-side jet. The dijet momentum balance is recovered when integrating low transverse momentum particles distributed over a wide angular range relative to the direction of the away-side jet
